The Family Practice Residency Program of Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital/
University of South Carolina School of Medicine developed a community-oriented
primary care (COPC) curriculum in 1994. The curriculum, which is funded by
a grant from the Bureau of Health Professions, trains resident physicians to
apply principles of public health to the practice of medicine. It teaches them
to identify health needs in the community they serve and to work with other
professionals and members of the community to meet those needs. The curriculum
consists of lectures, readings, workbooks, and a one-month community rotation
and project.
